Automated translation feature in TalentLMS

Automated translation feature in TalentLMS

To ensure accessibility for a diverse audience, particularly those from the Global South, I developed an automated translation feature for open public courses on TalentLMS. Initially, course content was presented in multiple languages (Spanish, Portuguese, and French) on a single page. However, as the content expanded, this approach became inefficient, prompting the need for a scalable solution.

After extensive exploration of TalentLMS functionality and several iterations, I implemented a custom solution by integrating the Google Cloud Translate API through JavaScript. This enhancement enabled the addition of buttons that allow learners to translate course content seamlessly into one of four languages.

During testing, we identified translation inaccuracies, particularly with technical terms. To address this, we introduced a custom glossary to standardize terminology. I collaborated with an external contractor to integrate the glossary into the custom code, supervising the process to ensure an enhanced and user-friendly translation experience.

As a result of this ongoing development, we have expanded our language offerings to include German and Traditional Chinese, further broadening accessibility. This feature exemplifies how creative problem-solving, technical expertise, and a commitment to inclusivity have become central to our value proposition in online course development.
